Toledo Volleyball Club

Notes for April 25th

I cannot believe that next week the regional championships start in Columbus.  Several of our teams will be ending their seasons.  Our 11/12 Youth teams are finished.  Where did the season go?  I am still trying to put the finishing touches on the summer camp brochure and the program book is at the printer and should be out next week.

On the summer agenda is 2 all skills camps in addition to several one day position specific training sessions.  Brie Hagerty will be coordinating the camps this summer.  She will also be conducting a special “Plyo ‘n Play” sessions on Saturday mornings for the high school kids.  It will combine an hour of volleyball specific plyometric training with an hour of volleyball specific training.  Registration will be limited.  Look for the registration forms next week.  All Camps will be held at Synergy.

The 2008 TVC Annual Meeting will be held at the LCRC in the far back room on Wednesday, May 7th at 7:00 p.m.  (Bring your own chair) We will present the 2007 financial statements and hold the board elections.  I am hoping we improve on the attendance from last year.  It won’t take much- I think we had one parent show up in addition to the board members!

The Season evaluations are on the website.  I encourage everyone to take the time to complete an evaluation.  There are two evaluations.  One is for the parents and deals with all aspects of the club.  The other is for the players to complete and is a coach evaluation.  These evaluations are helpful as we plan for next year.

Congratulations to the 13-1 team coached by Scott Mattera and Chrissy Gothke-they received notice on Tuesday that the OVR had received an additional bid for Nationals in Dallas and they were next in line.  We should know in the next week whether the 18-1 team also receives a reallocated bid.

It has been fun to see all of the pictures on the website that the parent reps have been sending in.  TVC teams have “mined” a lot of gold this year.  How about the 10-1 team?  They have 3 of their 4 tournaments.  That is pretty impressive.  I also want to send out props to the 14-3 team.  Parent Rep, Judi Zeiler does a fantastic job of keeping me up to date each week on the team’s successes.  Last week, they played in a 2 day Power Challenge and while they did not win the challenge, they had a very exciting victory over Blackswamp.  The Blackswamp team has denied 14-3 in the finals in two tournaments this year, so it is exciting that they returned the favor.

Coach Cromer has his 17-2 team chugging along quite nicely.  They won (again!) this past weekend in Oxford.  I was hoping he might run into my favorite Redhawk, Maggie and her roommate and coaching partner, Sarah Casey . . . but they were coaching their Borderline 12 year olds at another site.  Maggie and Sarah send their best to last year’s 13 Blue 1 team and the parents . . . apparently they are not quite as skilled in their coaching this year-their 12-3 team has yet to win a game.

Congratulations to 18-Mizuno who competed last weekend in Minneapolis and won the silver division.  They were within a breath of making it to gold, and had they not had several players playing on injured ankles, they might have gone all the way.  17-1 also competed in Minneapolis and had several matches go to a third game, where they lost close ones.

Special kudos to Holly Stuard and Amanda Longeway and the girls of 11-1.  Coach Rita Sheely of 11 Blue Sheely reported that 11-1 offered to stay and officiate for 11 Blue last weekend in Reynoldsburg.  I love getting reports of that type of club camaraderie and sportsmanship. 11-1 was rewarded for their gesture, as they beat Mintonette 11.1 in the finals for their second championship of the season.  11-1 has finished in the gold in every one of their tournaments.

12-1 had an exciting weekend last weekend at the LCRC.  They competed in a 13 Regional tournament and finished 2nd!  15 Brown and 16-3 both won their tournaments last weekend at the LCRC.  Laurie Koepfer, parent rep of 12 Blue Sabbagh reported that their team played well and were in every match last weekend.

I have been able to get out to see  most of our teams play, but unfortunately, I am probably going to miss a few.  May is a very busy month- in addition to Kelsey graduating from college on May 11th, I have two weddings on May 17th.  Those three special events will preclude me from attending the regional championships happening those weekends.  I know everyone has been working hard and some teams are having more success than others.  I would encourage you to continue to work hard and finish the season strong.

I want to send out a special get well wish to Molly Reilly- my tennis buddy, good friend, 15 EB Parent Rep and mother of Rosie (14-4) and Maggie (15 EBM)  Molly is recovering from surgery  and is facing some further treatments.  I signed up to bring dinner to the family, and to show you how loved Molly is, I am on the call list for July!  If a positive disposition and a sunny outlook on life can cure what ails you, Molly will quickly be back killing me at the net with her ferocious volleys-always delivered with a smile. J

Have a great weekend!  I am off to Columbus for a lacrosse game.  I haven’t yelled side-out, but I have found myself yelling “point” when the score does not get posted quickly enough.  You can take me out of the volleyball gym, but you can’t take the volleyball out of me!

Have a great weekend.
